DAVID EIDEM JAY RiEGEL JR., Auctioneer 717-739-4718 Take time to know costs of production COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Gram farmers should take a lesson from plumbers, declares L., Ronald Wade, an agricultural agent in Dorchester County for the University of Maryland’s Cooperative Extension Service. Wade noted that plumbers—and most other home appliance, repairmen always calculate their charges in advance. Likewise, farmers should take tune this winter to make detailed estimates of what their costs will be for producing an acre of each crop that could be grown this year on their land. There are several important uses for such cost information, Wade told 1,600 fanners attending the annual Delmarva Corn and Soybean Technology Conference recently. These uses mclude providing a basis for analyzing costs of production and setting a target price at which each crop will be marketed. Knowing your costs also can help to set a value on farmland and establish a line of credit with your lender. Most of all, knowing production PUBLIC SALE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24 Commencing at 9:00 A.M. Auctioneer: Wayne Hess Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 20,1982—£15 costs will help decide which crops and how many acres of each crop can be grown most profitably on your farm this year. Worksheets for calculating per acre costs of growing com and soybeans by either no-tiil or conventional tillage methods were made available to persons at tending the Salisbury educational meeting. They were tailored for Eastern Shore conditions, Wade pointed out. Delmarva area farmers who want similar information on costs of production are advised to check with their local county Extension agricultural agent. Wade advised potential users of his worksheets that he calculated machinery expenses on the basis of custom rates for the lower Eastern Shore. Another method for determining machinery costs would be to calculate depreciation on equip ment, plus interest, repair costs, taxes and insurance. Don’t forget to add estimated fuel and oil ex penses. The grand total should than be divided by the number of acres of cropland in order to arrive ataper-acrecost.
