1 HARRISBURG Pennsylvania meat firms, through their out standing support at junior livestock sales, have helped several hundred youth happily and successfully end their 4-H and FFA careers, according to State Agriculture Secretary Penrose Hallowell. “A total of 92 lambs, 96 swine and 120 head of beef were sold Friday, Jan. 15 at the Penn sylvania State Farm Show junior livestock sale. “The sale culminates from one to nine years of dedication for these youth,” Hallowell said. "The sales featured eight major Penn sylvania bidders and accounted for $164,543.75 in marketings,” Hallowell commended. The major buyer of.the Farm Show junior sales was Hatfield Packing Company of Hatfield, Montgomery County, a veteran buyer at junior livestock sales here. Hatfield purchased both the grand champion ($1,980) and reserve grand champion ($1,440) junior market swine, two class champions and all reserve Ahampions in the swine sale. Hatfield topped off their $23,671 contribution by bidding suc cessfully on 100 swine which did not make Friday’s sale. Hatfield paid $1.75 per hundredweight above the day’s top St. Louis market prices for a total of $B,BOO. Hatfield also holds the Farm. In 1980 Hatfield topped the auction for reserve grand champion at $8.50 per pound for a total of $3,978. Konhaus Turkey Farms of Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, was the second major bidder of the show, purchasing $17,619 worth of Livestock. Konhaus bought 17 steers 15 of which were raised by Cumberland County youth-and five lambs. The Konhaus stores feature pictures of each of the youth who raised the animals. Another long tune buyer at the Farm Show was Arbogast & Bastian, Inc. of Allentown and Danny George of George’s IGA FoodUner in Bethlehem, Lehigh County. Arbogast & Bastian purchased $16,507 of steers, hogs and lambs. Within that total, $12,961.90 was purchased for George’s FoodUner who bought the grand champion steer at $5 per pound for a total of $6,525. The steer was exhibited by 19-year-old Cecil Teets of Freedom, Beaver County. George’s Foodliner also took home five steers, 12 lambs and eight hogs. The company holds the Farm Show record price for the grand champion baby beef, paying $6.60 per pound for a total of $8,250 in 1980. Leffler, Inc. was a major buyer of steers, purchasing 11 steers at $11,005.65. Leffler of Richland, Lancaster County, purchsed seven Lancaster County steers along with Lebanon, Chester and Berks County entries. Hervitz Packing of Harrisburg, Dauphin County, was the fifth largest buyer at $5,990. Hervitz purchased six steers from Dauphin, Lancaster and Franklin County, while one hog was pur chased from Cumberland County. “We have supported junior livestock sales for 60 years,” said Joel Hervitz, owner. “It is a long range benefit for our future far mers which we like to invest in.” The Montgomery County 4-H Club was the sixth largest pur chaser in the sale at $4,696.59. Steers were bought from Lan caster, Chester and Susquehanna Counties. "We used the steers at a benefit banquet January 30,’’ said club leader Warren Landis of Sou derton, Montgomery County. “We had 850 people attend the banquet. Weaver, from East Earl m Lancaster County, purchased three hogs and three lambs from Lancaster and Chester Counties, and four steers including the Cumberland County champion lightweight steer at 80 cents per pound, totaling $1,032. “We’ve been buying junior livestock for five years, trying to help out the young people with their projects,” Weaver said. The eighth highest bidder at the sale, purchasing $4,300.80 worth of junior Livestock, was Kilmer’s Broiler placement up HARRISBURG Placements of broiler chicks in the Com monwealth during the week ending Jan. 30 were 2,321,000, according to the Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service. The placements were four percent above the corresponding week a year earlier and six percent above the previous week. Average placements during the past nine weeks were one percent above a year ago. Placements in the 19 key poultry producing states were 80,355,000, two percent above both the previous week and the same week a year earlier.
