The Vel-Rus operation consists of 64 milking registered Holsteins, averaging better than 17,000 pounds of milk and 660 pounds of fat, annually. Cinda’s father Ernest began classifying the herd four years ago and today the Oakes family can .boast of one Excellent cow. The milking herd is maintained on alfalfa hay, morning, noon and night. Corn silage is fed in the morning and night, top dressed with high moisture corn and a soybean mix. Cinda explained the Vel-Rus string is fed according to stage of lactation and production levels.
