S.C. asks USDA to assume meat, poultry inspection WASHINGTON, D.C. - South Carolina has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to assume responsibility for its state meat and poultry inspection programs, effective Feb. 22. Donald L. Houston, ad ministrator of USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, said the state has advised USDA that it can no longer continue funding its inspection programs. Houston said under the federal meat and poultry inspection acts, any state must give up its in spection program if it cannot enforce requirements at least equal to those at the federal level. “When USDA assumes responsibility for state programs, it is usually voluntary and most often for financial reasons,” Houston said. To ensure a smooth transition to the federal inspection program, USDA is working closely with officials in the state. The transition to federal inspection means 118 meat and poultry plants now under state inspection in South Carolina and operating solely within the state must apply for federal inspection services. When USDA assumes inspection responsibilities in South Carolina, it will be responsible for state meat inspection programs in 24 states and poultry inspection in 28 states.
