FARM SHOW - The Calvin H. Lazarus family of Whitehall, received the prestigious 1982 Pennsylvania Farm Show Family of the Year Award during Secretary of Agriculture Night festivities on Monday. In presenting the award State Agriculture Secretary Penrose Hallowell said, “I am extremely proud to present this award to an outstanding Pennsylvania farm family for its contributions to state agriculture. “The Lazarus family, which includes Calvin’s wife Lorene and their nine children, has always been active in the state’s agricultural community and have exhibited Yorkshire, Duroc and Spotted Swine at the Farm Show for more than 20 years,’ ’ he added. Calvin, 56, was born and raised in the Whitehall area and started in the hog business at the age of 11 when he and his grandfather went to auction and purchased several pigs. Lazarus said, “I kept the animals on *my grandfather’s farm. The family raises more than 1,600 hogs a year and operates a farmers market that offers a wide variety of fruits and garden vegetables. The family began showing swine at the Farm Show in the 1950’s and has always done well in each year’s competition. At the 1981 Farm Show, the family took Grand Champion and Reserve Champion m the Yorkshire bred gilt class while at this year’s show, they captured the Grand Champion ribbon in both the Yorkshire and Spotted Swme classes. Lazarus noted that two of his sons, Grant and Les, are trying something different this year by placing entries m the Hampshire and Rambouillet sheep classes. “I’m anxious to see if they do as well showing sheep as they do hogs.” The Lazarus family was chosen to receive the Farm Show Family of the Year Award by members of the State Farm Products Show Commission.
