C4—Lancaster Fanning, Thursday, December 24,1981 Seedmen get exclusive rights to variety production WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection for 19 new seed varieties that give their owners exclusive rights to reproduce the varieties in the United States for 18 years. Thomas H. Porter, an official with USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, said the newly protected varieties are alfalfa, dwarf snap bean, large lima bean, caper spurge, cotton, soybean, common vetch and common wheat. Porter said certificates of Fertilizer use hits record high WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Fertilizer Comsumption reached a record high 53.2 million tons during fiscal 1981 that ended June 30. That’s up 1 percent from a year earlier and record high for the second straight year. Increase came despite the fact that the top two users, and 6 of the top 10, used less fertilizer than the year before. Illinois remained the top fer tilizer user, though its total, at 4.26 million tons, was down 5 percent from a year earlier.
