A problem with this method is that tungus is closely associated with the rotting process, so it could' be harmful to small children. One can speed up the rotting process by applying a high nitrogen ' fertilizer to the stump. Finley says, "Bacteria needs nitrogen to live, so the application ot nitrogen could speed up the decay process. ’ ’ Chipping requires a commercial tree ser vice that, chips away the stump and lateral roots to 10 inches below ground surface. This method is fast and easy but not cheap. Saltpeter is the chemical generally found in "mystery ads” and can.be purchased at a fraction ot the cost ot "mystery powders.” Holes are drilled in the stump and saltpeter Rabies cases on rise HARRISBURG-The incidence of rabies has been on the increase in neighboring states and a slight increase has shown up in several Pennsylvania Counties, according to State Agriculture Secretary Penrose Hallowell. “Fourteen cases of rabies in skunks, coons and a ground bog were reported in Allegheny County, Maryland during the period of September- October 1981, and over 130 cases were reported in Virginia this year. Lancaster Farming, Saturday, December 12,1981—D31 tilled in, then the boles are plugged and allowed to sit tor two or three months.'’ After the chemical diffuses through the stump, kerosene is poured on the stump and set on tire. But this method has been tested and found to be ineffective. Burning by itselt or in combination with chemicals is otten dangerous because the stump can smolder tor weeks and the chemicals can be carried through the roots to undesirable areas. Many com munities have or dinances banning outdoor tires. Check Rabies appears to be moving northward in skunks and raccoons, and the abundance of these animals will in crease the spread of the disease," Hallowell said. Three cases of rabies in skunks were reported this fall in the State College, Centre County area and one case in the Altoona area. These were the first cases of rabid skunks in Penn sylvania in over two years. The first case of rabies in a cow since 1973, was diagnosed this local authontes before burning. Chopping and digging are not easy and requires a sharp ax and strong back. This method works if you are rugged and stubborn enough. Pulling the stump out with a tractor or bulldozer is generally destructive to the rest ot the yard and leaves a very large hole. Stump removal is not an easy job, Finley says that no one method works well in all situations. Think caretully about all aspects ot any method before trying it. fall in Adams County. “Rabies is an acute virus disease which can affect warm-blooded animals including man. The incidence of the disease has been low in recent years in most cases found in bats,” but, Hallowell said, “it is still a serious problem, certainly one which we cannot afford to take lightly.” The majority of positive rabies cases have involved bats, raccoons and skunks. However, dogs and cats have been found with the disease and pet owners should take precautionery measur es. Hallowell said that a rabies vaccination for a pet dog or cat is a simple, safe and ef fective way to protect your pet. Rabies vac cine comes in two types: an inactivated virus vaccine which is ad ministered annually, and a modified live virus vacine which is administered every three years. “If bitten by an animal or bat, the person should take several precautions,” Hallowell said.' “Don’t panic, try to identify the animal. Never ignore an animal bite. Wash the wound with soap and a lot of water and call your physician. Bites should be reported to the police. “Do not try to catch or kill the animal unless absolutely necessary,” Hallowell said. “The police or our State Dog Law Officers are trained and better equipped for that job.” Pet owners who suspect their animal has been exposed to a rabid animal should confine the pet and immediately call a veterinarian for professional advice. The incubation period of rabies varies from a few weeks to more than a year. Hallowell noted the Department’s Sum merdale Laboratory provides rabies diagnostic services’free of charge. Results of diagnostic testing are reported to the con cerned individuals as soon as testing procedures are com plete.
