BY JOYCE BUPP Staff Correspondent YORK York County Society of Farm Women members got a peek at their new cookbook, elected new officers, and honored several of their own during the group’s 42nd annual convention, held at St. Matthew church on November 5. Ten years ago, the Farm Women published their first, and highly successful "York County Farm Women Go To The Kitchen,” now in its third printing with over 12,000 copies sold. Proceeds from the book all went to benefit the 4-H center. Pleased customer demand sent the more than 600 Farm Women members from 37 societies back to their kitchen to compile a brand edition, delivered literally "hot Trim-a-tree winners receive YORK Ann Huschenretuer, Shane Taylor, and Brant Warner each won |lO prizes and a chance to have their all-natural ornament selected to hang on the official Christmas tree of the Governor’s mansion in Harrisburg. The three were winners in the York County Farmers Association sponsored run-off for the state contest and recipients of top cash prizes offered by the farmers group. Ann Huschenreuter styled a Christmas rose of corn husk to win the prettiest category. Ann, 14, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hutschenreuter, R 2, Airville and a member of the 4-Hprogram. Farm Women elect officers off-the-press” to the convention last week, from the printer, while the first convention goers were signing up at the registration table. Cookbook committee members Susan Lehman, Genet Sellers and Pat Sechrist then convinced the printer to hurry back to his shop to rush another hundred copies through and deliver them back to the convention by lunch. First cookbook copy was presented to outgoing county president Mane Smyser, who presided over the morning business meeting and election of officers. Elected president for 1981-83 is Treva Whorl, Glen Rock, a member of Group 18, Hunetown. Earlier in the session, she awards Taylor, R 2, Airville. A cross of twigs, woven togethern with natural vine material, was chosen the most original. Ten-year-old Brant, Warner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Warner, Rl, Glen Rock, fashioned the Christmas cross. Three runner-up prizes of $5 each were awarded to A.J. Grim, age 7, of Rl, Seven Valleys, Jeffrey Marsh, 4, Rl, Seven Valleys, and Shonna Taylor, 13, of R 2, Airville. While the three top entries will compete to hang on Governor Thornburgh’s tree, the remaining natural ornaments are to be of fered to the county's Pleasant Acres complex for use as hobday decorations in the hospital-home facility. Judge for the, ornaments was York County Extension Agent John T. Smith. JB FREE 717-949-6501 presented the condensed group report, noting that over $5300 had been contributed to numerous chantable, church and community organizations by the county’s 35 individual societies. Assisting her will be first vice president Arlene Miller, Logan ville, a member of Group 41 of Potosi; second vice-president Ruth Anne Santiago, York, a member of Group #2, Jacobus, secretary- Mary Dull, Hellam, Group 14, and treasurer, Susan Lehman, Seven Valleys. State president Helen Hess of Lancaster honored four of York’s members who reached the age of 90 the past year. They were Mabel Rishel of Group 1 who also founded the York Society, Elsie Rishel, also a charter member of Group 1, Loren Seifert, Group 4, Dover, and Amanda Wierman of E tiers Group 26. Mrs. Hess spoke briefly, offering congratulations to York for at taining the largest membership of any county in the state. She noted that she has seen the scope of the Farm Women change through the years, with more attention now being turned toward community involvement and issues of local and national interest. “Be proud to be a homemaker,’’ ' she told the 300 women attending, “But don’t apologize if you join the business world.” Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 14,1981—115 With farmland disappearing at record rates, Mrs. Hess urged the Farm Women societies to contact their elected representatives to support land preservation efforts. She also urged them to continue to promote good living conditions for rural living and to continue promoting a Christian way of life at their meetings. Touching on state board business, Mrs. Hess alerted York members that as yet there is no host for the regular Spring Rally. The state convention will meet January 11 and 12, with a key election for several officers and state directors. Also featured during the day long program was key speaker Rev. Ronald Weagley of York, and the intimates, a barbershop quartet. Green Valley Group 26 captured two top awards at the county-level of the statewide competition on quilting. Their winning entries took the pieced top category with a feathered star quilt, and the small items division with a calico quilted pillow featuring the Farm Women logo in the center. Both winning quilted pieces were designed by Ruth Hake. Winner of the ap pliqued top quilt style was a Dresden plate design entered by Edna Baughman, Group 4.
