Martin, Lewis B. Groff Not Responsible for Accidents indicate supplies of most small game are “fair-to-good,” the result of successful reproductive seasons, good food supplies and cover conditions. Back in 1978, the rabbit harvest fell to 1,35 million. Recovery was noticed in 1979, and last year the harvest was over 2.5 million. The pheasant harvest dipped to 750,000 in 1978, biit was over 900,000 last year. Supplies of cot tontails, at least in September, were at excellent levels in three counties, good in 46, fair in 16, and poor in only two counties. Rabbit populations seem best in eastern areas of the state. Ringneck pheasant supplies are not at the record levels of the ’7os. With changing land use patterns, pheasant populations probably will never again be that high. To offset losses in natural reproduction prior to and during the month-long season, the Game Commission will release 219,500 pheasants throughout the state. Consequently, pheasant numbers are at levels which should provide hunting op portunities in most sections. In September, game protectors rated pheasant populations as good in 16 counties (compared to 10 in 1980) fc fair in 43, and poor in eight counties. The best pheasant hunting will probably be found in the south central .and southeastern parts of the state. The outlook for turkeys is an exciting part of this year’s pre season hunting picture. Pennsylvania probably has as many wild turkeys now as it ever had, largely due to expanding range. Wildlife managers believe the total turkey population in the state exceeds 100,000 birds. In September, district game protectors in 16 counties rated turkey supplies as excellent (compared to 11 counties in 1980), 21 counties reported good populations of the big birds, 19 had fair levels, and the birds were in poor supply or nonexistent in 11 counties. Game protectors report the best turkey hunting should be in southcentral counties, followed closely by northeastern and northcentral counties. These are the daily and possession limits for small game species during the regular season; Cottontail Rabbits A limit of four per day per hunter, and eight in possession. Ringneck Pheasants The daily limit is two, with a possession limit of four. Wild Turkey A limit of one per hunter for the fall hunting season.
