HARRISBURG Fair weather
over much of the commonwealth
during the week ending Oct. 19
gave farmers an average of five
days suitable for field activities,
according to the Pennsylvania
Crop Reporting Service.
Field activities during the week
included spreading lime and
fertilizer; planting' barley and
wheat; plowing; and harvesting
ensilage corn, corn for gram,
soybeans, potatoes, apples and hay
crops.
Topsoil moisture statewide was
rated 56 percent adequate, 37
percent short, and six percent
surplus. In the northern region 83
percent rated soil moisture
adequate and 17 percent surplus.
The Champ is owned by the Ralston Purina Co. and
is traveling all the way from St. Louis to Lancaster for
the first time in more than 2Q years to allow you to

Fair weather helps boost field work
in the central region 60 percem

The potatoe harvest in the
commonwealth, is still lagging
behind last year with 88 percent of
the crop harvested compared with
92 percent a year ago. In the north
82 percent is harvested, in the

vested, is virtually complete.
The soybean crop in Penn
sylvania is 21 percent harvested
compared with 38 percent last
year. In the north 14 percent is
harvested, in the central region 38
percent is harvested, and in the
