HARRISBURG - Two 4-H members, Richard Shaffer of Somerset County, and Christine McCahren of Juniata County each were awarded a quarter horse from Bob Evans Farms of Ohio, during the State 4-H Horse Show in Harrisburg, October 9-11. According to farmer and sausagemaker Bob Evans, "providing good quality colts to 4- H members who show outstanding leadership qualities is our way of expressing appreciation of the fine work of the 4-H program.’ ’ Evans, raised on a farm, has supported the efforts of young people interested in agriculture and currently serves as a trustee of the Ohio 4-H Foundation. “Nominations for the award were screened by each 4-H Horse District Committee,” says James P. Gallagher, Extension animal scientist at The Pennsylvania State University.' “Winners were selected by a committee consisting of Penn State College of Agriculture facility and staff. ’ ’ Rick the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Shaffer, is a member of the Somerset Horse and Rider 4-H Club. He has been a 4-H member for five years. Angela Ceccqii, of Edgewood Drive, Hastings, was awarded an Arabian gelding for her outstanding 4-H club work presented by Dr. and Mrs. Paul Suorsa, of Slippery Rock, in behalf of the Pennsylvania Arabian Association. With Angela is Dan Suorsa, son of the donors. Two youths win Quarter Horses As a 4-H horse club member, he advanced through four units of horsemanship. He competed in four county roundups and the district and state 4-H horse shows. Rick served as vice president and news reporter of his club and presented demonstrations on showmanship, riding safety, and saddle care. The award winner also participated in 13 local riding clinics, tours, and awards programs. In addition to his horse work, he completed projects in gardening, archery, and physicalfitness. Rick is a member of the school wrestling team, Somerset Saddle Club, Pennsylvania Junior Quarter Horse Association,. Pennsylvania Quarter Horse Association and is an acolyte in his church. “I am extremely pleased to have won this Quarter Horse,” Rick says. “My parents will help me properly raise the yearling.” Christine the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William S. McCahren, has been a 4-H member for five years. She is a member of the Juniata County 4-H Horse and Pony Club. In her horse club, Christine served as president and secretary and was on the publicity and fund raising committees. She won the club’s high point award. She participated in several conferences the first Quarter Horse Show in Lititz; Quarter Horse Congress at Columbus, Ohio; and Horse Sense Clinic at Shermansdale. In addition to horse club work, Christine completed projects in foods and nutrition, bicycling, crafts, swine, and nature study.
