Dakota, Rhode Island are ‘free’ of swine brucellosis WASHINGTON, D.C. - North Dakota and Rhode Island have been added to the growing list of states that have been declared free of brucellosis in swine, according to veterinary officials of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Dr. Granville H. Frye, chief staff veterinarian for swine brucellosis eradication in USDA’s Animal and Plant Health In spection Service, said North Dakota and Rhode Island were approved for validatated brucellosis-free status August 26 and September 9, respectively. "North Dakota qualified for validation hy testing all herds selling breeding stock and the required percentage of sows and boars sent to slaughter,” Frye said "This testing started in July “Hunter Safety” saves lives UNIVERSITY PARK heading into the woods Some hunters this fall to enjoy their Sunnypig 2 3000 BTU Sunnypig 6 10,000 BTU STORE HOURS: Mon.-Fri. 7:30 to 4:30 Sat. 7:30 to 11:30 1979 and was completed June 30, 1981.” Rhode Island achieved free status using the area testing method of validation. Under this method, Frye said, all herds in the states were tested and qualified as validated brucellosis free from July 1980 to June 1981. The addition of North Dakota and Rhode Island raised the number of validated brucellosis free states to 18, plus Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The other validated states are: California, Colorado, Idaho, lowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Nevada, Penn sylvania, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. sport will be involved in hunting accidents. Although the per centage is small, for those' people involved the events will be tragic. Fortunately, in Pennsylvania that percentage of hunting accidents has been decreasing steadily. Much of the credit for fewer accidents can be attributed to the success of the ‘‘Hunter Safety” program of which a correspondence course available from Penn State has been a part. This educational course was developed cooperatively with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. In Pennsylvania, the required hunter safety training for all first time hunters of less than 16 years of age must be fulfilled by the minimum 4-hour classroom or field in struction as ad ministered by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Although this correspondence course is intended for new hunters, all tyit the most experienced hunters will find some new facts, ideas, and ways to develop a sense of values as they mature as sportsmen. Many illustrations reinforce the written material and will help those who study the course to practice and acquire skills necessary to sport hunting. You can get a copy of the course to help you understand the rules of safe hunting by sending $6.75, including postage, to Hunter Safety, Box 5000, University Park, PA 16802. Make check payable to Penn State. LOOKING FOR ANEWTASTt? RmJ Hmm 0* TW Rnji md Mfcj mm 4
