D2—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 10,1981 National 4-H Awards Program names 41 LANCASTER - Four-H members from across Penn sylvania have been named state winners in the 1981 4-H National Awards Program and will receive expense-paid trips to National 4-H Congress in Chicago, November 29-December 3 to compete for awards at the national level. Carroll Howes, associate 4-H youth division leader at Penn State who announced the award selec tions, said they were judged on the basis of project work, leadership ability, and participation in county and state activities. These forty-one members were picked from among the more than 100,000 youth who annually take part in the Extension Service educational 4-H program. Also named were alumni win ners picked from a quarter million Pennsylvania 4-H alumni. Two of the alumni chosen are Joy Walls and R. Budd Dwyer. Their story and that of the 4-H winners, follows: Alumni Winners R. Budd Dwyer UNIVERSITY PARK - R. Budd Dwyer, of 738 Maple Street, Meadville, treasurer of the Commonwealth, today was named state winner of the 1981 Penn sylvania 4-H Alumni Recognition Award in the National 4-H Awards Program. He will receive a plaque and compete for an alumni recognition award at the national level. A Crawford County 4-H member for seven years, he was active in dairy club work until his enrollment at Allegheny College. As a club member he participated in all local, county, and district dairy shows as well as open class competition at the county fair. His registered Ayrshires received grand and reserve grand championship ribbons each year in both 4-H and open classes. The award winner served as 4-H club secretary for five years and was a charter member and officer of the Crawford County 4-H Council. He attended 4-H camp, 4- H Leadership Training School at Penn State, and staffed the 4-H booth at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. From 1965-71, Mr. Dwyer served as state representative and was assistant alumni secretary at Allegheny College. He was elected state senator in 1971 and state treasurer in 1981. While serving as state senator, he attended the Dickinson School of Law and received the juris doctor degree in 1978. He is a member of the Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and American Bar Associations. As a member of the legislature, the award winner sponsored and supported legislation beneficial to 4-H and has continued to meet with 4-H members in Harrisburg. “When I joined 4-H, I was a shy, timid boy,” Mr. Dwyer says. "The 4-H leadership positions helped me to get along with others and to speak effectively to groups.” Joy Walls UNIVERISTY PARK - Mrs. Jerry S. Walls, of R 3, Mon toursville, today was named state winner of the 1981 Pennsylvania 4- H Awards Program. Mrs. Walls is a teacher in an enrichment program for gifted students rotating among five school districts. Mrs. Walls was selected from among the quarter-million Penn sylvania 4-H alumni. Support oi the alumni recognition program is provided by the Friends of National 4-H Council. As a 4-H member in Maryland her project work included foods and nutrition, sewing, and public speaking. She assisted in organizing a 4-H club for young girls and served as a junior leader. Mrs. Walls attended the 4-H Older Youth Conference and In terstate Leadership Training Conferences in West Virginia as a delegate representing Anne Arundel County and the state of Maryland. A graduate of Towson State College, she was invited by Lycoming County school officials to assist in designing a dif ferentiated curriculum for gifted students. She helped in designing a new program to foster teaching excellence which has been im plemented by the Loyalsock High School Parent Teacher Support Group. The award winner assisted in developing an environmental education curriculum for elementary students. With help from members of a service club she developed educational programming in this area. Mrs. Walls also directed research into successful environmental education -programs in other sections of the state. In Lycoming County, she served as Sunday School teacher and superintendent, clerk of the church, and chairperson of the board of trustees. Mrs. Walls was a member of the land use committee in 1974-75 to develop a consensus of farmland preservation and land use control authority. The award winner organized the Lycoming County Sugar N’ Spice 4- H club consisting of 53 boys and girls.'She mobilized parents to serve as project leaders or helpers with special events. She assists each year will county and district 4-H demon stratum day, county fair, fashio revue, roundup, and blue form workshop. She served on tf county 4-H advisory committee f< four years and on the regional 4 advisory committee for two year Adams County UNIVERSITY PARK - Two young adults -were named state contest winners from Adams County. Named were Rachael Furlong, 18, of 519 Ridge Avenue, Mc- Sherrystown, state winner in commodity marketing, and Cindy Wilson, 18, of HI, Biglerville, winner in the recreation contest. Cindy will be eligible to attend National 4-H Congress in Chicago, November 29-December 3. Rachael will receive an expense paid trip -to the Commodity Marketing Symposium to be held next spring in Chicago. Rachel Furlong Rachael Furlong The daughter of Mrs. Mary Furlong, Rachael .has been a 4-H member for 10 years. A member of the McSherrystown 4-H Club, she served as senator and vice president. She also assisted with club activities and events as a teen leader. The state commodity marketing contest winner completed projects in foods, teen leadership, and commodity marketing. _ Locally, Rachael took part in the 4-H demonstration night, teen leaders banquet, day camp, county exchange program, and officers training. She also participated in District 4-H Camp, State 4-H Capital Days, Regional 4-H Demonstration Contest, Pennsylvania 4-H Leadership Congress, and Regional 4-H Teen Leaders Retreat. Commenting on the values of the educational youth program, Rachael-said: “Through 4-H I have learned the importance of com munication. It also has helped me in selecting a course of study in college.” Cindy Wilson Cindy Wilson The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Wilson, she is a freshman at Indiana University of Penn sylvania. She has been a 4-H member for nine years. A member of the Upper Adams 4-H Club, Cindy served as president, teen leader, secretary, news reporter, game leader, and parliamentarian. The state recreation contest winner • completed projects in bicycle, sewing, leathercraft, ceramics, and citizenship. Locally, she took part in the 4-H roundup, day camp, teenarama, dress revue, demonstration night, officers training, and talent con test. Cindy also participated m the Regional 4-H Dress Revue, Regional 4-H Teen' Leaders Retreat, Interstate 4-H Exchange Program, State Farm Show, Pennsylvania 4-H Leadership Congress, Citizenship Short Course, and State 4-H Achievement Days. “Club work has made me set higher standards for myself. I also gained leadership abilities and a sense of pride in what I do,” said Cindy. Berks County UNIVERSITY PARK - Two Berks County young adults were named state scholarship: named were Danielle Marie Yoder, 18, of Rl, Hamburg, state nominee for an Edwin T. Meredith Foundation scholarship; and William Zollers, Jr., 18, of Longsdale Drive, R 2, Mertztown, nominee for an Agricultural Careers Scholarship. William will be eligible to attend National 4-H Congress in Chicago, November 29-December 3. Both will compete for awards at the national level. -Support of the Edwin T. Danielle Yoder Danielle Voder The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel A. Yoder, Danielle is a freshman at the Penn State Berks Campus. She has been a 4-H member for 10 years. A member of the Tilden 4-H Club, she served as president, vice president, secretary, news reporter, song leader and game leader. She also assisted with club activities and events as a teen leader. The state scholarship nominee completed projects in teen leadership, wildlife conservation, .sewing, bicycling, pet care, veterinary science, and citizen ship. Danielle took part in National 4- H Congress, State 4-H Achievement Days, Pennsylvania 4-H Leadership Congress, State 4- H Capital Days, and West Virginia Older 4-H Members Conference. In 1979 she was named the Outstanding 4-H Girl in Berks County. William Zollers The son of Mr. and Mrs. William Zollers, Sr., he is a freshman at Penn State. He has been a 4-H member for six years. A member of the Eastern Berks 4-H Dairy Club, William served as teen leader, treasurer, and county council representative. He completed projects in dairy, tractor maintenance, teen leadership, and veterinary science.'' He took part m the District and State 4-H Dairy Show, 4-H Dairy Bowl, Farm Show, Regional 4-H Dairy Judging Contest, and All- American Dairy Show. winners William won the grand champion Guernsey trophy at the Allentown Fair and was a county 4-H blue form winner. William Zollers Bradford County '* Shelly Wrisley UNIVERSITY PARK Wrisley, 18, of R 3, Troy; will receive an expense-paid trip to National 4-H Congress in Chicago. Support of the leadership project is provided by Reader’s Digest. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Wrisley, she is a freshman at Clarion State College. She has been a 4-H member for seven years. A member of the Bast Smithfield Flyers 4-H Club, she served as president, vice president, treasurer, and news reporter. She also assisted with club activities and events as a teen leader. The state leadership contest winner completed projects in teen leadership, foods, clothing, recreation, crafts, and home and family management. Locally, she took, part m the 4-H fashion revue, poster contest, day camp, demonstration night, and)' exchange program. Shelly also participated in the Regional 4-H Fashion Revue, Regional 4-H Teen Leaders Retreat, Regional 4-H Local Government Seminar,'District 4-H Camp, State 4-H Capital Days, National 4-H Conference, Penn sylvania 4-H Leadership Congress, and State 4-H Achievement Days. Commenting on the values of the educational youth program, the contest winner said: “Club work has provided valuable leadership training. It also helped me to develop many skills through project work.” Cambria County UNIVERSITY PARK Dorothy Stroz, 18, of R 2, Johnstown was named state health contest winner. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Stroz, she is a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. She has been a member for ten years.
