She adds, “I think we should
definitely advertise more about all
the different projects that are
available. It’s not just animals and
cooking. We should advertise all
the really different projects.”
She says she would also like to
find some way to get more kids
involved in County Council ac
tivities, perhaps by working
harder on car pooling, since get
ting there can be a big problem in a
county as large as Lancaster
County.
One of Gretchen’s goals as the
outstanding 4-H girl would be to
explain to those not f amiliar with 4-
H all the different projects, the
different clubs and the op
portunities available to 4-H
members.
High School activities also mean
a lot to Hal and Gretchen. A senior
at lampeter Strasburg High
School, Gretchen plays the
baritone horn in the band and also
serves as student director. She
participates in chorus, is a peer
counselor, plays hockey, par
ticipates in the drama club,
student council and National
Honor Society. She hopes to attend
a four-year college and study
business administration. This
summer she attended the Kotary
Leadership Conference at
Dickinson College.
Hal is also a band member at
Hempfield High School where he is
a senior. He is a percussion leader
which means he helps distribute
music and keeps a close eye on the
equipment. He also works with

individuals who may be having
trouble with the music, giving
suggestions and helping to build
their self-confidence. He is a
member of the Bible club, the
concert band and the orchestra.
Hal would like to attend Penn
State and study criminology.
Also named to the new 4-H Honor
Roll, Hal said, “1 think the honor
roll is a good idea and a good way
to get everybody involved. It
makes the point that here’s a group
of people who have done a lot. ”
Having experienced the success
ol 4-H, Gretchen would like to see
more young people become
members, but she adds, "1 would
encourage adults or parents to
become leaders. They get a lot of
support from the Extension office.
You have to be versatile and there
are some hassles, but it is wor
thwhile.”
One ot the first duties as Out
standing 4-H Boy and Girl has been
to ride in the local fair parades, a
total ot seven in the next tew
weeks' While it’s a little over
whelming, Gretchen says, "1 Jove
meeting people so it should be
fun.” She acknowledges that
they’ll be doing a Jot ot waving as
they ride in their convertibles.
When they were selected as
Outstanding Boy and Girl it was a
recognition ot their past
achievements, but tor Hal and
Gretchen the award also brings a
year ot challenge and opportunity.
Hal sums up their feelings about
their responsibility to the title
when he says, "Now 1 teel 1 can do
something and make people see 4-
H.”
