It’s not just animals and cooking. We should advertise all the really different projects.” She says she would also like to find some way to get more kids involved in County Council ac tivities, perhaps by working harder on car pooling, since get ting there can be a big problem in a county as large as Lancaster County. One of Gretchen’s goals as the outstanding 4-H girl would be to explain to those not f amiliar with 4- H all the different projects, the different clubs and the op portunities available to 4-H members. High School activities also mean a lot to Hal and Gretchen. A senior at lampeter Strasburg High School, Gretchen plays the baritone horn in the band and also serves as student director. She participates in chorus, is a peer counselor, plays hockey, par ticipates in the drama club, student council and National Honor Society. She hopes to attend a four-year college and study business administration. This summer she attended the Kotary Leadership Conference at Dickinson College. Hal is also a band member at Hempfield High School where he is a senior. He is a percussion leader which means he helps distribute music and keeps a close eye on the equipment. It makes the point that here’s a group of people who have done a lot. ” Having experienced the success ol 4-H, Gretchen would like to see more young people become members, but she adds, "1 would encourage adults or parents to become leaders. They get a lot of support from the Extension office. You have to be versatile and there are some hassles, but it is wor thwhile.” One ot the first duties as Out standing 4-H Boy and Girl has been to ride in the local fair parades, a total ot seven in the next tew weeks' While it’s a little over whelming, Gretchen says, "1 Jove meeting people so it should be fun.” She acknowledges that they’ll be doing a Jot ot waving as they ride in their convertibles. When they were selected as Outstanding Boy and Girl it was a recognition ot their past achievements, but tor Hal and Gretchen the award also brings a year ot challenge and opportunity. Conservation measures applied to this farmland include diversion terraces and an animal waste facility. Next stop is the Jack L.
