Middy-Noddies weave a blue-ribbon shawl LAMPETER - A shawl of creamy beige and rust, sheared, spun and woven m just 87 minutes, earned the Niddy-Noddies a blue ribbon last week at the Lampeter Fair’s Sheep to Shawl Contest. The shawl, made usmg-a buck weave, measured 87 inches long and 22 inches wide and sold to Linda Peters of Lancaster for $77. Niddy-Noddies team members are Dave Eckman, Pequea, shearer; Phyllis Robinson, Chruchville, spinner; Barb Lynch, Pequea, spinner; Connie Rannels, Hershey, spinner; and weaver Dotty Lewis, Lancaster. The team placed second at the Pennsylvania Farm Show last January. Placing first at that event was the Fancy Flock Flyers, third place winners last week.. Ewes, LTD, new to the contest world, spun and wove their way to second place in 108 minutes. They produced a shawl 82 inches long of gray, brown and cream using the canvas weave. This shawl sold to Carol Harmsh of Lancaster for f 79. Ewes, LTD includes Dean Zeigler, Manheun, shearer; Pat Nelson, Washington Boro, spinner; Pat O’Hara, Lancaster, spinner; Margaret Waldeck, Millersville, spinner; and weaver Vivian Lord, Millersville. The Fancy Flock Flyers, third, sold their pebble-weaved shawl, finished in just 97 minutes, to Wesley Hinnch of East Chatham, N.Y. lor $6O. Team members include Glenn Seibert, Lebanon, shearer; Dianne DUger, Lebanon, spinner; Jimmie Hepford, Somerdale, spinner; Alice Winner, tirantville, spinner; and weaver Carol Buskirk. This workshop, designed for beginners and experienced producers alike, is being sponsored by the Maryland Sheep Breeders’ Assoc. The session begins at 10 a.m. with a two-hour hands-on clinic looking at sheep health problems, such as proper hoof trimming and foot rot treatment and demon strations of worming methods and parasite control. University of Maryland’s Emory Leffel and Rick Lund, a professional shepherd from Great Britain, will lead this session.
