A24—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 26,1981 Champions at the West Lam BY DEBBIE KOONTZ LAMPETER One year later and one step better seemed to be the motto of Mike Shertzer as he earned Grand Champion of the Holstein breed with the same cow which earned him Reserve Champion honors last year. Mike received his ribbon during the dairy show at the West Lam peter Fair, Thursday. Mike is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Shertzer of Rocky Springs Farms. They milk 40 Holsteins and this particular winner carries an average of 1700 pounds of milk. Reserve honors went to Jeff Burkholder, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Burkholder. The Burkholders milk 85 Holsteins on their Burk-Ann Farm with an average of 19,000 pounds. Champion of the Guernsey breed went to Ken Garber and the Reserve Champion honor to his son, Gerald. The Garbers are from Willow Farms, Willow Street. They milk 60 Guernseys with a herd average of 13,130. Gerald has been a member of FFA for five years. Warren Schmuck earned Champion honors in the Ayrshire class while Jere Shertzer took top honors in the Jersey class. Jere, 12, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Shertzer of Long Lane. Judge for the afternoon event was Jane Pepple of Oxford, Chester County. Jane farms a 65- Holstein operation with husband Bob. Dean earns baby beef title LAMPETER Michelle Dean, 15, emerged from the ring carrying the Grand Champion ribbon Wednesday night at the West Lampeter Fair’s Baby Beef Show - a title well deserved for showing her Angus/Holstein. cross to top honors. Michelle is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Dean of Strasburg and has been a member of the 4-H club for seven years. Reserve honors went to Wayne Hess of Conestoga who also took Reserve Champion honors in the FFA category. Wayne is the 18- year-old son of Abram and Mary Jane Hess and has shown 4 steers in FFA. Wayne’s champion was an Angus/Chianina.cross. Showing Grand Champion FFA steer was Danny Martin of Pequea. Danny is the 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Martin.
