The number of milk cows in the Commonwealth during August averaged 711,000 head, down 1,000 head from a year ago. Milk production per cow averaged 1,030 pounds in August, up 45 pounds from a year ago and 60 pounds above August, 1979. United States milk production during August totaled 11.1 billion pounds, three percent above August, 1980. Milk production per cow averaged 1,014 pounds, 19 pounds above last year and 43 pounds more than August, 1979. Milk cows-on farms averaged 10.9 million head, up one percent from last year.
