A24—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 19,1981 Arrowsmith sisters survive rain to take fitting honors QUARRYVILLE - The colored breed open and 4-H dairy show was included in the opening festivities of the annual Solanco Fair, Wednesday. However the schedule didn’t call for rain and rain it did, until the competition was moved inside, temporarily. Eventually the rain stopped and in the quest for a blue ribbon, Ayrshires, Guernseys, Jerseys and their exhibitors sloshed their way around the grassy showring. However, Sarah and Helen Arrowsmith were two Peach Bottom sisters that managed to keep their animals clean in spite of the muddy conditions. Both were named Champion Fitter and Showman in their respective 4-H division. The champs are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. William Arrowsmith, Hillacres Farm. Helen, 11, captured the Junior Fitting and Showing title. She added to her winning record when show judge J. Lloyd Ebersole, sire analyst for Sire Power, chose her 2-year-old Jersey, “Ellen,” as Grand Champion. Wednesday wasn’t the first time this summer the dyamic duo of Helen and “Ellen” took top honors. In fact it was a repeat, repeat performance. In July, Helen’s champion Jersey, Hillacres Ben Ellen captured the Grand Champion Jersey Rosette at the Lancaster County 4-H round-up. Later in the summer, Helen and Ellen did it again with Grand Mary Kirk’s Grand lampion . iernsey, in Jttom. Her fitting expertise was good enough to earn her the Senior division Fitter and Showmanship title. Another breeder from Peach Bottom, Warren Schmuck, exhibited the top Ayrshire of the day. Spruce Villa K. Lady, an aged dry cow, swept, the Ayrshire competition and was named Grand Champion. Schmuck purchased the big Ayrshire several years ago to add to his milking string at Pinelane Farms. She added two daughters to Schmuck’s herd and both off spring captured the Ayrshire Produce of Dam class. Sired by Oak Ridge Flashy Klondike, the Ayrshire champ is due to freshen next month to “Jasper” a sample sire. And the Peach Bottom cham pions kept coming.
