Last year, Pennsylvania farmers protected more than 9,000 acres. The use of winter cover is especially important for low residue crops and where com is harvested for silage or the stalks are removed for bedding, states Joel Myers, Dauphin County Soil Conservation Service. Rye grain is the most commonly used cover crop seed. With adequate moisture, it will provide soil protection for the winter months as well as organic material for next year’s crop. Seeding may be done after crops are removed, when silage is harvested, or when other row crops are removed in time to prepare a seed bed and then apply the rye or other winter grain. Advantages in clude a reduction in labor for the fanner and an earlier date for seeding. Names of aerial ap plicators working in your area can be obtained by calling the local Conservation District. Seeding rates for winter cover cropping using rye or wheat are two bushels per acre. The same application rate is used for aerial, blower or conventional application of the seed. Myers stresses soil losses of 10-20 tons per acre can occur on land where residues are sparse during the winter months. By using a winter cover crop, soil loss can be significantly reduced with the added bonus of organic matter and improved moisture retention capacity for next year’s crop. ROBERT ULMER Middleburg, Pa.
