ClS—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 29,1981 Bergey’s swine champ brings record $7 per pound NORRISTOWN - A Farm Show atmosphere seemed to pervade the sales ring as Hatfield Packing paid a record price of $7 per pound for the grand champion of the Bucks- Mont 4-H Swine Show & Sale. Jerry Clemens, representmg Hatfield, purchased the prize winning animal from Mike Bergey of Telford, a member of the Montgomery County 4-H Livestock Club, who bred, raised and showed his pig Mike’s artmal also was named Montgomery County champion and champion light heavy weight individual. Ron Thompson of Bucks showed the Bucks County champion and reserve grand champion which Hatfield also purchased for $4.40 a pound. Tom Leidy of Leidy’s Meats in Souderton was the buyer of the grand champion pen-of-three shown by Rich Troxel of Dublin. Leidy’s also purchased the reserved Montgomery County champion and champion light weight hog exhibited by Karen Leidy of Souderton, paying $2.70 a pound. Bev Bergey of Telford was named grand champion showman after also winning champion senior showman honors. Bev is a member of the Montgomery County 4-H Md. 4-H’ers have new Fair home COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland’s 4-H exhibitors at the 100th State Fair will be celebrating the centennial year in a new 28,000 square foot 4-H/Home Arts building. The building will house exhibits relating to food, clothing, home furnishings, vegetables, flowers, woodworking, electricity, entomology, photography, art and crafts. More than 3,500 4-H’ers are expected in the contests, judging events, demonstrations and shows at the traditional “4-H Week at Timomum.” The week that opens with a 4-H Dog Show in the Cow Palace Show Ring at 9 a.m. on opening day, August 29, and closes with the 4- H/FFA Parade on Sunday, Sep tember 6, will be filled with Maryland youth exhibiting not only agricultural products but also skills in photography, art, small engine maintenance and repair, and automobile care and safety. From the slightly less than 12 percent of Maryland’s 4-H members who live on farms will come sheep, cows, steers, and swine that will demonstrate the care and knowledge acquired in 4- H livestock projects. Members will also demonstrate skills at operating tractors with four-wheel wagons in tow, “trouble-shooting” disabled or unsafe automobiles, and following UNIVERSITY PARK - Dairy and livestock producers continue to consign animals to an all-breeds sale to aid The Pennsylvania State University’s Ag Arena fund raising project. Consignments notv total 63, according to Dr. Milford Hed dleson, College of Agriculture coordinator of environmental quality affairs and co-chairman of the fund raising campaign. The goal is several hundred high quality animals in this sale to be held December 11 in Harrisburg’s Farm Show Complex. Livestock Club. Champions from this event will proceed to regional competition later in the fall. The 100th Maryland State Fair will produce champion livestock which can provide first-year college costs for a 4-H member or a deluge of tears as an animal that has been cared for, coddled and coaxed to a championship is led away at the livestock sale on Septembers. On Friday, September 4 at 8 p.m., the 1981 4-H Fashion Revue will parade well-groomed and manicured 4-H models across a stage at the Horse Sales Pavilhon to demonstrate the fashion-making abilities of Maryland 4-H’ers. A grand champion will be selected and will receive an expense-paid trip to the National 4-H Fashion Revue in Chicago during 4-H Club Congress. When the week ends, thousands ot Maryland’s young people 4-H members from 9-19 will have shared skills and demonstratedthe 4-H goals of “learning by doing” and “making the best better.” They will have come from farms, towns and cities to participate m an agricultural celebration that began 100 years ago. Ag arena consignments continue to sign up Breeders who consign beef, .sheep, swine, and dairy animals are being asked to donate at least 50 percent of the sale price to the building fund. Breed associations are participating in securing and selecting consignments. The 190,000-square-foot facility, to be located adjacent to Beaver Stadium, will provide for classes and laboratories involving horses, dairy, and livestock. It also will be used for various demonstrations connected with Extension courses and conferences.
