“The increase is needed to offer
more equitable compensation to
owners of affected swine and to
encourage owners to promptly
eliminate infected breeding swine
and thereby reduce the spread of
the disease,” Becton said.
Brucellosis is a contagious,
infectious disease that affects
animals and man. A cooperative
state-federal program to eradicate
brucellosis from cattle and swine
is being carried out in each of the
states.
Program officials believe the
increase in indemnity for swine
will accelerate the brucellosis
eradication effort.
At the present time, 857 counties
have qualified as validated
brucellosis-free. This includes all
counties in 16 states California,
Colorado, Idaho, lowa, Maine,
Minnesota, Montana, Nevada,
New Hampshire, Oregon, South
Dakota, Utah, Vermont,
Washington, Wisconsin and
Wyoming plus Puerto Rico and
the Virgin Islands.
