The Northern Tier Farmers Umon Milk Producers was presented its Articles of Association on July 27. Northern Tier joins the Farmers Umon Milk Producers Association (based in Mercer County) and the York County Farmers Umon Energy League (the state’s only alchohol fuels cooperative) as the third cooperative sponsored by the Pennsylvania Farmers Umon, an organization representing over 5,300 farm families in the Com monwealth. Elected as president of the cooperative was William Sturges of Wellsboro, current head of the Tioga County organization. USDA proposes swine brucellosis indemnity WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Department of Agriculture of ficials who direct the brucellosis eradication program are proposing to increase the in demnity paid for breeding swine destroyed because of the disease. Brucellosis is a contagious, infectious disease that affects animals and man. A cooperative state-federal program to eradicate brucellosis from cattle and swine is being carried out in each of the states. Program officials believe the increase in indemnity for swine will accelerate the brucellosis eradication effort. At the present time, 857 counties have qualified as validated brucellosis-free. This includes all counties in 16 states California, Colorado, Idaho, lowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming plus Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
