A24—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 1,1981 Berks Holstein dub picnic BY LAUREL SCHAEFFER Staff Correspondent HAMBURG Over 150 people gathered at the farm of Richard Hoppes on July 23 for the annual Berks County Holstein Club picnic. Working under the name of Secret Valley Farms, Hoppes milks 60 registered Holsteins and farms 150 acres, moslty in alfalfa, orchard grass or com for silage. Hoppes also custom fills “ag bags” for haylage or silage. Highlighting the affair was a judging contest consisting of three classes; aged cows; two year olds; and heifers. Betty Jean Hoch, Berks County Dairy Princess reviewed her activities at the state pageant and explained how much the State Dairy Association has been doing for milk promotion. Betty Jean also stressed the importance of using the “Real Seal” and commented that she hopes it catches on quickly in the area. Clyde Myers, Berks County Extension agent updated the dairymen on the progress of the county 4-H center.
