Poul M.T. Hansen
The Dairy Research Foundation
Award was given to Paul M. T.
Hansen, Professor of Food Science
at Ohio State University, in
recognition of outstanding
research pertaining to dairy in
dustry problems.
A native of Denmark, Hansen’s
early work on the solubility of
chocolate flavor led to the
development of a spectroscopic
method for measuring the
chocolate content of dairy

William Thatcher
The 1981 recipient of the Upjohn
Physiology Award William
Thatcher received his B.S. and
M.S. degrees from the University
of Maryland and his Ph.D. degree
from Michigan State University in
1968. Immediately upon
graduation he joined the faculty at
the University of Florida and has
been involved in research and
teaching at that institution since
that time.
He has developed a most active
research program which has
resulted in 29 journal articles and
38 research papers at scientific

meetings in the past 5 years. His
research work has largely con
centrated in four areas: Ovulatory
control, stress effects on
reproductive function,
reproductive management and
embryo development and con
ceptus-maternal interactions.
David A. Wieckert the 1981
recipient of the Ralston Purina
Teaching Award is a master
teacher. Former students have
described him as dedicated,
respected, enthusiastic, an in
spiring leader, and a teacher who
takes a personal interest in
students.
After a 2-year tour as a food
inspector in the U.S. Army,
Wieckert returned to earn
master’s and doctoral degrees at
theUnivfci .ty of Wisconsin in 1956
and 1963, respectively. His em
ployment during those graduate
years included extension youth
work in Wisconsin, a"teaching
appointment at Southern Illinois
University, and a stmt as a
Pulbright Scholar at Massey
Agricultural College in New
Zealand. He joined the faculty of
the Department of Dairy Science

David A. Wieckert
at Wisconsin as assistant professor
in 1963, and was promoted to
associate professor in 1967 and to
professor in 1970. He has been a
member of ADSA for 22 years, and
he chaired the Education Com
mittee in 1971-72.
Abele Kuipers
The Richard M. Hoyt Memorial
Award was presented annually by
the National Milk Producers
Federation to Abele Kuipers, a
graduate student whose research
efforts have direct application to
the solution of significant problems
facing the dairy industry.
A native of Roordahuizum,
Friesland, the Netherlands,
Kuipers received a B.S. in Animal
Science from the Netherlands
Agricultural University in 1969 and
then an M.S. from the same in
stitution in 1972.
Kuipers has authored or
coauthored 16 publications and has
recently completed his Ph.D. in
Dairy Science under the direction
of Dr. George E. Shook, University
of Wisconsin - Madison. He is
currently serving as Scientist at
the Research and Advisory In
stitute for Cattle Husbandry in
Lelystad, the Netherlands.
The 1981 winner of the Pfizer
Award, Howard Morris was

science and technology. This in
dividual’s efforts have blended
basic and applied research to make
highly significant contributions in
the areas of biochemistry,
microbiology, process technology
and product development. His
interests have encompassed work
on the major cheese varieties
including Blue, Cheddar and
Swiss.
Morris received his Bachelor’s
degree from Utah State University
and the Master’s and Doctorate
degrees from the University of
Minnesota. He joined the staff of
the University of Minnesota as
Teaching Assistant in 1946 and has
served that institution con
tinuously since that date with the
rank of Professor since 1960. His
research and studies have involved
sabbatical terms in Europe, the
United Kingdon, Wales and New
Zealand. In addition to A D.S. A. he
is a member of American
Association for the Advancement
of Science, American Association
for Microbiology, Institute of Food
Technologists and the In
ternational Association of Milk,
Food, and Environmental
Sanitarians.
