Immediately upon graduation he joined the faculty at the University of Florida and has been involved in research and teaching at that institution since that time. David A. Wieckert the 1981 recipient of the Ralston Purina Teaching Award is a master teacher. Former students have described him as dedicated, respected, enthusiastic, an in spiring leader, and a teacher who takes a personal interest in students. After a 2-year tour as a food inspector in the U.S. Army, Wieckert returned to earn master’s and doctoral degrees at theUnivfci .ty of Wisconsin in 1956 and 1963, respectively. His em ployment during those graduate years included extension youth work in Wisconsin, a"teaching appointment at Southern Illinois University, and a stmt as a Pulbright Scholar at Massey Agricultural College in New Zealand. He has been a member of ADSA for 22 years, and he chaired the Education Com mittee in 1971-72. Abele Kuipers The Richard M. Hoyt Memorial Award was presented annually by the National Milk Producers Federation to Abele Kuipers, a graduate student whose research efforts have direct application to the solution of significant problems facing the dairy industry. A native of Roordahuizum, Friesland, the Netherlands, Kuipers received a B.S. in Animal Science from the Netherlands Agricultural University in 1969 and then an M.S. from the same in stitution in 1972. Kuipers has authored or coauthored 16 publications and has recently completed his Ph.D. in Dairy Science under the direction of Dr. George E. Shook, University of Wisconsin - Madison. He is currently serving as Scientist at the Research and Advisory In stitute for Cattle Husbandry in Lelystad, the Netherlands.
