4-H’ ers ‘round-up’ talent on cool, summer day

QUARRYVILLE - Mother
nature was on her best behavior,
Wednesday at the Solanco
Fairground, and provided county
4-H youths with a cool, comfortable
day to show their dairy heifers and
cows
Fortunately for Janice Garber,
11, and several other junior
showmen, the cool weather was a
relief smce their Junior Showman
class lasted close to a half hour
The group led, and set, and
switched again and again before
Judge Roy Malik finally chose
Janice as Champion Junior
Showman. The daughter of Mr.
and Mrs Kenneth Garber, Willow
Street, Janice has been showing
for three years. Her intermediate
Guernsey calf. Willows Extra
Sophie, was named Junior Reserve
Champion for that Breed.
Lancaster County’s 1980 Dairy
Princess, Connie Balmer, 19,
captured Champion Senior
Showman honors. Connie, a 10-
year veteran in the show ring, also
took home the ribbon for Grand
Champion Guernsey with her
entry, Gordlines Princess Nanette.
The Grand Champion Ayrshire
was a repeat performance of last

Showman. Connie, who has been showing for 10 years, is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse G. Balmer, Lititz.

hard work pays off. The Willow Street youngster, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Garber was named Champion Junior
Showman.

Walnut Run Miss Sarah Purcel
was named Reserve Grand
Champion Guernsey. The senior
yearling, also the Junior Breed
Champ, was shown by Mike
Rohrer, 12, son of Mr. Robert
Rohrer, Strasburg.
Hillacres Ben Ellen, a 2%-year
old Jersey took home Grand
Champion honors for that breed.
Ellen, also named Senior Champ
was shown by her owner and
breeder, Helen Arrowsmith, 11,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William
Arrowsmith, Peach Bottom
Jere Shertzer, 12, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Roy Shertzer exhibited the
Reserve Grand Champion Jersey,
Ralaine Asm Fancy, a senior calf.
The Brown Swiss class, which
consisted of two entries, found

Springs Milestone Ada, shown by
Steve Kauffman. Kauffman, 19, is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Kauffman, Elizabethtown.
