King, Penn State associate dean for Extension, points out Miller is responsible for coordination of the Beaver County Extension Service. He succeeds A. L. Curran who recently retired. A native of Reynoldsville, he was named to the Beaver County Extension staff in November 1968. He received a bachelor of science degree from Penn State in 1968, majoring in animal industries. During his tenure in Beaver County, Miller worked closely with the Dairy Herd Improvement Association testing program in improving production and farm income. He plans and conducts educational programs for county beef and sheep producers. The new county Extension director initiated a daily radio program to provide homeowners with information in the areas of gardening, pomology, and land scaping. Block says no need for meat import restrictions WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. meat imports in 1981 now are expected to total almost 125-million pounds below the level that would require restraints on imports under the Meat Import Law, ac cording to Secretary of Agriculture John E. Block. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s third quarterly estimate of U.S. meat imports indicates the United States will, import about 1.322 billion pounds of meat during 1981, while the trigger point for imposing quotas under the law is 1.447 billion pounds. Each year, more than 500 4-H members certain meats primarily beef and veal if USDA estimates imports of those meats will equal or exceed the trigger level. On March 3 when the second quarterly estimate was issued, Block said an analysis of con ditions in this country and abroad affecting meat unports strongly suggested there would be no need for import restrictions for the remainder of the year. The third quarterly estimate continues this outlook, he said. USDA makes a new estimate of meat imports before each calendar quarter. The fourth quarterly estimate will be made in Sep tember. Through this program, numerous Beaver County mem bers represented Pennsylvania in national driving skills competition and two received scholarships through participation in the program. The Extension agent initiated a 4-H tractor club program in 1969 to help youth learn safe tractor operation. He plans and develops this educational work with volunteer leaders in two clubs.
