A2B—lancastcr Farming, Saturday, July 11, 1981 Last week’s rain limits fieldwork HARKISBURG - Showers occurring mid-week and over the weekend limited farm fieldwork across the Commonwealth to four days during the week ending July 6, according to the Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service. Field activities included har vesting wheat, barley, tart cherries and vegetable crops; making hay and haylage; cultivating potatoes and corn; and spraying potatoes and fruit trees. Statewide, topsoil moisture was rated 86 percent adequate and 14 percent surplus. The northern region soils were rated 100 percent adequate, while the central counties rated topsoil moisture at 78 percent adequate and 22 percent surplus. Southern sods were rated 88 percent adequate and 12 percent surplus. Com height averaged 29 inches throughout the state, seven inches higher than last year. Operators in the northern, central and southern regions reported com heights of 26, 30 and 31 inches, respectively. Southern corn growers reported infestation of com borers. Soybean planting is virtually complete, on a par with a year ago. Tobacco transplanting is also virtually complete. Several tobacco growers reported the presence of blue mold in their fields. Barley crops in the Com monwealth are progressing ahead of last year with 26 percent turning yellow, 37 percent ripe and 33 percent harvested. The south reported four percent turning, 32 percent ripe and 64 percent har vested while the central region reported 32 percent turning, 53 percent ripe and 14 percent har vested. In the north, the barley crop is 67 percent turning and eight percent ripe. Statewide, wheat is 12 percent headed; 59 percent turning yellow, 26 percent ripe and less than five percent harvested. The southern region reported 39 percent of the crop turning, 54 percent ripe and seven percent harvested. The central region reported seven percent headed, 80 percent turning yellow, 11 percent ripe and less than five percent harvested, while in the north, the wheat crop is 50 percent headed and 50 percent turning yellow. Southern growers reported some lodging and problems with wheat scab. Pennsylvania oats are 77 percent headed and 15 percent turning yellow, compared to 79 percent beaded and five percent turning last year at this time. The southern area oat crop is 71 percent headed and 29 percent turning, the central region reported 86 percent headed and 11 percent turning, and in the north, the crop is 76 percent headed and less than five percent turning yellow. The first cutting of alfalfa is 94 percent harvested, behind last year at this time when it was virtually complete. Twenty-five percent of the second cutting has been harvested. The south reported first cutting harvest virtually complete and second cutting 39 percent complete; the central region reported first cutting also virtually complete and second cutting 24 percent com plete; while the north reported 79 percent of the first cutting and 20 percent of the second cutting harvested. Clove-timothy harvest is 85 percent complete, compared to last year when 88 percent was harvested.
