A32—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 27,1901 UNIVERSITY PARK - Dexter N. Putnam, professor of dairy science extension at Penn State, will retire Monday with almost 25 years of service. Smce 1956, Putnam has been responsible for the development and continued operation of elec tronic data processing of. dairy production records through the Pennsylvania Dairy Herd Im provement Association. Penn State is one of 10 centers throughout the United States that annually processes DHIA production records for more than 3.9 million cows in over 58,000 herds. Eight percent of all DHIA records processed in the National Cooperative Dairy Herd Im provement Program are handled at Penn State. Ms. Rachel White of Bridgevilie, Del. receives a plaque for her services to soil conservation in Delaware from Casher Evans, chairman of the Conservation Service. The retiring professor has been involved in such programs, as centralized processing of DHIA records and central testing of DHIA milk samples for fat, protein, and somatic cells. Through the effort, Putnam and other Extension staff members, 25,000 fewer dairy producers, milking 200,000 less cows, produced 2 billion pounds more milk in 1980 than in 1955. During the same period, production per cow enrolled in DHIA mcreases by 5,100 pounds and the number of NEWARK, Del. - Mrs. Rachel White of Bndgeville, Del. was recently recognized for her con tributions to soil conservation in Sussex Count/. She was honored for her 27‘"years of effort in the promotion of stewardship, and her work with young people. A native of Sussex County, Mrs. White helped to initiate the Ladies Auxiliary of the Delaware Soil Conservation Districts, and served as the first president of a similar organization in the. northeast region. She was awarded a plaque by Casher Evans of Selbyville, chairman of the Sussex County Soil Conservation of District. The retiring Extension specialist has been a regular participant in DHIA Computer Center Workshops and Northeast Training Conferences. He is author of “How Production is Recorded,” a section of a college text. Dairy Cattle Breeding, published by J.B. LippmcottCo. Putnam conducted research with G.A. A native of Wilson, New Hamp; shire, Putnam received a bachelor of science degree from the University of New Hampshire and master of science degree from West Virginia University, both m dairy husbandry. Prior to his appointment to the Penn State faculty, he was in volved in production testing for the American Jersey Cattle dub; Extension dairyman- at the University of Vermont; ad ministrative assistant for the Ayrshire Breeders Association; instructor at West r Virginia University; and communications officer in the U.S. Navy. In 1973, Putnam was recipient of the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association Extension Award and in 1978 the Pennsylvania Jersey Cattle Club Award. He is a member of the American Dairy Science Association, Dairy Shrine, Extension Professors Association, and Epsilon Sigma Phi, Alpha Zeta,- and Alpha Gamma Rho fraternities.
