C26—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 30,1981 NEWARK, Del. - Two University of Delaware plant science majors have received scholarships from the Delaware- Maryland Plant Food Association. Scholarships worth $4OO each went to Mark Sultenfuss, a junior studying in agronomy, and Clare Evans, a senior degree with distinction candidate in soil science. A gram farmer from Centreville, Md., Sultenfuss leads a kind of double life as a student, living on campus during the academic year but commuting the 55 miles from Neward to his home on weekends and free afternoons to help his father farm. They have about 375 acres on which they’re growing com this year; roughly 90 percent of it no-till, at Mark’s suggestion. He and his father share the work now, but after Mark graduates next year his father plans to retire and turn the farm over to him. An active member of the University of Delaware Agronomy Club, he and Clare Evans were Students earn plarrt-fsd scholarships both on the team that placed third against midwestem competition from other agricultural college teams at the University of Illinois earlier this spring. He’s also an officer in Delaware’s collegiate FFA chapter. Because of his farming background, practicality is what turns Mark on, wheather he’s listening to a lecture or doing work on an assignment for a course. “I’m always looking for a direct application of the information I get,’’ he says. An able student, he’s been on the Dean’s list every semester except last fall. “We had a busy combine season,” he says, explaining the dip in his grade point average then. Clare Evans is a candidate for a degree with distinction m the plant science department. She has spent her senior year doing basic research on the phosphorus sup plying power of two Delaware soils, with guidance from her advisor, soil specialist Leo Cotnoir. She was one of the founders of the University of Delaware Agronomy Club Chapter and is its current president. A native of Chester, Va., Clare is the daughter of a horticulturist.
