Cooperative Sheep and Wool
Growers will hold their 1981 Wool
Pool on June 17, from 7 a.m. to 3
p.m. at the Carlisle Fairgrounds.
Producers from nearby counties
are welcome to market their
fleeces at the Wool Pool. This
year’s buyer is A.H. Helmig & Co.,
Inc., Narberth. Prices for fleeces
will be determined by grade.
Wool will be graded and weighed
in the pooler’s presence and a
receipt will be given for the total
weight jn each grade. Producers
will receive checks for wool within
a few weeks.
Penn State Extension livestock
specialists will be 'conducting
anything published previously for
Pennsylvania. It brings together
factors of soil depth, drainage,
available moisture, and productive
capacities of soils.
Published in 1976, the map has
been used widely by industrial and
community planners, Penn State
officials report. High school and
college teachers find it helpful in
studying earth sciences. It was
demonstrations on wool grading as
part of the day’s activities.
All fleeces must be tied, reminds
Donna Duncan, secretary
treasurer of the Cooperative.
“Loose fleeces and fleeces tied
with binder twine or other string
will be sold as rejects. Paper twine
will be sold at the Fairgrounds.
“Wool must be free of excessive
moisture,” she adds. “Examine
your fleeces now. If they’re wet,
dry them in the sun and store in a
dry place not in the cellar or on
concrete.
• “And, please don’t bring wobl to
. the Pool in plastic woven bags or
they’ll be severely discounted.” ,
developed by Howard W. Higbee,
professor emeritus of soil science,
who considers it vital for soil and
water resource managers.
Multiple patterns and colors are
used to portray the 153 soil groups
coded and symbolized for
identification. Each soil unit or
group is evaluated by 16 charac
teristics. The more important
characteristics are depth, soil
drainage environment, geological
source of soil material, available
moisture, plant rooting zones, and
dominant crop production.
Copies are available for $3.25,
including tax and postage, from
