Farmers assets,
capital increases
QUARRYVILLE -
The total production
assets in agriculture
increased from $162.8
billion in 1960 to $796 4
billion in 1980. This is an
increase of 390 percent
The value of
production assets per
farm increased from
$46,000 to $372,000, or an
increase of over 700
percent
The assets per farm
worker also increased
over 700 percent in this
same 1960 to 1980 period
The decrease in farm
numbers and farm
workers along with a
rapid increase in
capitalization has ac
counted for this large
increase in production
assets per worker The
increase this past year
exceeded 15 percent
This kind of an in
crease indicates the
tremendous need for
detailed management of
farms, especially as it
deals with farm
finances, says
Frederick A Hughes,
Extension farm
management specialist,
at Penn State Univer
sity.
If a farmer is going to
make a reasonable
return on this kind of an
investment he must
have a very large output
per man hour on his
farm This means that
the efficiency that he
attains in producing the
unit of a farm product
has to be great Farm
operators who get low
production from crops
and livestock and have
poor labor efficiency
will find it very difficult
to remain in farming
with this much in
vestment per worker
Farmers who are
borrowing money to buy
inflated assets can be in
real trouble if their
income to repay loans
lags behind die larger
loan payments resulting
from the increase in
borrowed funds
One of the major
problems evident on
farms today is the
slowdown in production
efficiency of crops,
livestock and man
labor
The production ef
ficiency of these items
increased greatly
during the last 15 years,
but have changed little
in the past three or four
years.
Today’s farmer must
