1981 National Peach Council
Achievement Award was
presented to Norman F Childers
of Rutgers University, New
Brunswick, New Jersey.
Outgoing NPC President
Douglas Zee presented the Award
at the Western Theme Party
during the NPC Convention in
Phoenix, Arizona
Childers has been an outstanding
contributor to the advancement of
the peach industry and of National
Peach Council. He has attended 12
NPC conventions beginning in
Columbus, Ohio, in 1937, and has
served on many NPC committees
He is currently a member of the
Research & Education Committee
In 1963, Childers organized and

Conference and produced the book
"The Peach” a 600 page book
which has been printed in 4
editions, circulating 8500 copies
He is now revising the book for a
sth edition in 1982
From 1974 to 1978, Childers
traveled around the world visiting
55 countries studying various
aspects of horticulture including
peach growing His findings on
those travels were discussed in his
speech at the NPC convention in
San Antonio m 1978, which was
published in the proceedings of
that meeting
Childers suggested and helped
establish the Carroll R Miller
Award sponsored by National
Peach Council This award is
a fresh start on spring with a
high-performance MF tractor.

Abdalla
Childers was born in Moscow,
Idaho, and was active as a 4-H
member there He became in
terested in pomology, and studied
at the University ofMissouri After
receiving his doctorate at Cornell
University, he served on the
faculty there and at Ohio State
University. He served as Assistant
Director of the USDA Experiment
Station in Puerto Rico, then tnoved
on to Rutgers University and has
been there since 1948. He has
