In seven feeding trials with over 1000 pigs, supplemental folic acid in the ration increased growth rate up to 15 percent and improved feed efficiency up to nine percent. The results appear to be linked to the incidence of mold in the com fed, reports Kenneth W. Purser, Master Mix Swine Research Specialist who headed the project. “In studies where the com was relatively free of toxin-producing molds, folic acid appeared to be of little benefit. But when the com contained relatively high levels of toxin-producing molds, added folic acid improved gams and ef ficiency, ’ ’ Purser explains. “Therefore it appears that folic acid is very important in main taining the maximum utilization of grains contaminated with mycotoxm-producmg molds. “These include the aspergillus molds common in the South, and Fusanum molds often seen in the Midwest ’ Folic acid, a seldom-discussed vitamin, aids in the maturation of the red blood cells. Mature red blood cells are needed to transport oxygen and carbo dioxide in the pig’s bloodstream Folic acid may serve some role m the inactivation of mold toxins and help the pig cope with moldy gram. ‘"Since a large percentage of the U S corn crop contains some mold contamination, folic acid should have a positive effect in many commercial hog operations,” Purser says. ‘lndividual responses will vary with the species of mold present, the levels of toxin encountered, and with the weight of the pigs.” Researchers fed folic acid to pigs weaned at three, four and five week of age Over a four-week feeding period, younger, light weight pigs showed the greatest response to diets containing supplemental folic acid. Some folic acid-fed pigs gained 2 5 pounds more on five pounds less feed by eight weeks of age. Folic acid may also be important to hog producers feeding sulfa drugs, Purser adds. Here’s why. Normally, Parama-ammobenz oic acid contained in the pig’s large intestine is reacted upon by bac teria to produce folic acid. Under proper conditions, adequate folic acid is produced for optimum pig health and growth. However, when sulfa drugs are used, they act on the bacteria to inhibit the conversion of PABA to folic acid. Power King one tough tractor!
