Trees cut
fuel bills
HARRISBURG -
“Don’t blame high fuel
bills on cold weather
blame them on wmter
winds,” says Duayne
Forsberg, resource
specialist, Dauphin
Conservation District.
“Knock those winds out
of old man winter’s sails
by planting trees around
your home for a wind
break ”
According to For
sberg, a solid row of
evergreens, about 20
feet high, will slow down
winds for a ground
distance up to 200 feet
and can lower home
heating bills up to 20
percent.
Each spring the
Dauphin Conservation
District observes Arbor
Day by conducting a
tree seedling sale.
These trees are three
and four year old
bareroot seedlings.
Four species of
coniferous trees
averaging 12” in height
and six species of
deciduous trees
averaging 20” in height
are available.
Forsberg elaborated
on the species for sale.
They are Douglas fir,
blue spruce, white pme,
Norway spruce, red
oak, white flowering
dogwood, black walnut,
Russian olive and
scarlet maple.
