Cl4—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 7,1981 Horse owners shoitoourse scheduled NORRISTOWN - A special shortcourse for horse owners has been planned for March 24 and 25 to be held at the Montgomery County 4-H Center m Lansdale The course is open to all horse owners but particularly aimed at the professional or interested private owner According to County Agent Nancy KadwiU, the program will feature two well-known speakers, Susan Hams of Courtland, New York, and Dr. David Marshall of Kennett Square Susan Hams is the author of “Grooming To Win” and “Hor semanship In Pictures.” Recently a senes of her articles on teaching and grooming have appeared in the “Practical Horseman” magazine Ms Harris travels throughout the country giving clinics and teaching. She also works with the National Camp Horsemanship Association and was the former manager of Carousel Farms and 5- H Acres School of Horsemanship in New York. A very versatile horsewoman, Harris judges stock, hunt and saddle seat classes, participates in eventing and jumping and has conducted overnight trail rides. Ms. Hams will cover topics such as advertising, buying and selling horses, legal hassels involved in marketing, selecting the right horse for your needs and pre purchase try-outs She will also cover conditioning your horse from rough shape to basic show or sport condition, interval training and grooming tips. Dr. David Marshall is with the large animal surgery department of the noted New Botton Veterinary Clinic in Kennett Square. Dr. Marshall will cover basic herd health and first aide for your horse, elaborating on the major issues of bleeding, wound care and colic. Particular areas of interest will include proper hay storage, barn “housekeeping”, farm chemicals and wiring concerns. Completing the program will be Nancy Kadwili who will explain the availability and use of the Penn State University soil and forage testing services. The course will run from 9:30 A.M-3.30 P.M. both days with registration and coffee from 9 00- 9:30 The course fee is $32.00 per person (which includes registration, coffee breaks, lunch and written materials for both days).
