A24—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 28,1981 HARRIBSURG Two swine herds that were under quarantine for pseudorabies came off the list last week, according to Dr John W Cable, head of the Swine Health Division of PDA’s Bureau of Animal Industry These two breeding operations depopulated their herds and are beginning the clean-up process scrubbing down barns, cleaning out manure pits, and getting ready for the Department’s crew to come in to disinfect for Herpes virus iat no charge to the farmer) Then, after 30 days, these farms will be allowed to restock, said Cable Even though these two farms have come off the quarantine list, there are still two more farms on than what was reported a month ago Cable reported 24 herds presently are quarantined, con sisting of 11 feedlots, 10 breeding herds, and 3 herds in the process of depopulating The majority of the herds are in Lancaster County, although Lebanon County has one herd remaining under quarantine as does Schuylkill County A new county having a pseudorabies quarantined herd is Chester County But, according to Cable, this PRV incident is unrelated to those occunng in the neighboring counties Pigs were brought in from lowa to a research facility in Chester County,' Cable explained The shipment blood-tested negative back in lowa, but the blood test taken 30 days after their arrival here tested positive for PRV Fortunately, the pigs were in isolation and were quickly sent off for sausages So there will be no problems resulting from this herd Since the hogs can be traced Put up a good High-Tensile FENCE THIS YEAR and SAVE trouble and money for MANY YEARS.
