He is one of the out standing individuals in the national agricultural community and has exceptionally fine qualifications to lead the Cooperative Extension Service.” Frank L. Bentz, University vice president for agricultural affairs and legislative relations said, “The Extension Service is one of the most important segments of the University. Oliver will assume a proud heritage here as he will be only the seventh director since the CES was established in Maryland in 1914.1 look forward to working with Oliver and am confident that the work of the Extension Service will go forward under his direc tion.” At present, Oliver is associate dean of the College of Agriculture and director of the Arizona Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arizona. A native of Massachusetts, the new director earned the B.S. degree in agricultural education at Penn State and taught vocational agriculture in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He added the M.Ed. degree at Penn State with a major in agricultural education and a minor in horticulture. After a four-year stmt as assistant professor of horticulture in Pennsylvania, he completed his doctoral studies at the Ohio State University with a double major m Extension administration and horticulture and a minor in research and statistics. He returned to Penn State where he rose through the ranks to assistant dean and assistant director for agriculture, natural resources and agricultural engineering programs, and professor of ornamental hor ticulture. He also served a short term as interim head of the Department of Horticulture. Before moving to Arizona in 1980, Oliver was made director of Polled Hereford juniors GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Two regmal junior Polled Hereford heifer shows are planned for this summer, according to the American Polled Hereford Association. A Western Regional will be held June 14 to 16, in Reno, Nev., and an Eastern Regional is scheduled for July 12 to 14, in Gaithersburg, Md. Oliver holds membership m nine professional organizations and six honorary organizations including the national extension and hor ticultural honorary fraternities. During his academic career, Oliver has authored or co-authored 17 publications and has presented more than a dozen scientific papers at regional or national meetings of learned societies. He is listed in Who’s Who in the East, Men of Achievement, and Com munity Leaders and Noteworthy Americans. Oliver is married and is the father of two daughters, Deborah and Linda. As director of the Maryland Extension Service he will be responsible for directing the ef forts of more than 500 employees across the state who are charged with taking practical information from the Land-grant University to “the people of the United States” in their local environments. exchange ideas.
