N.E. Weed Society holds annual meeting PHILADELPHIA - The City o Brotherly Love played host to the 35th Annual Northeastern Weed Science Society meeting when more than 300 participants gathered recently at the Philadelphia Sheraton. The three-day meeting focused on 147 scientific papers, presented m separate sessions including Agronomy; Ecology, Physiology and Soils; Industry, Forestry and Conservation; Ornamentals and Turf A special Biological Weed Control Symposium featured speakers from USDA and Abbott Research Center discussing the use of insects and plant pathogens for weed control President Garry Schnappmger, of Ciba-Geigy, opened the general session by relating what weed scientists can do to “get involved” in the defense of agricultural chemicals. Keynote speaker Jack D. Early, president of the National Agricultural Chemicals Assn, followed with a review of his organization’s action plan to combat overregulation on behalf of the chemical industry. Awards Chairman James Parochetti, of the USDA-SEA 'Extension, presented awards to three member scientists for their ■ H i jine i very ( 1 wate cond gas flc ss-lme The res se-wasi Salvage ) handle hen put vater he< Imagine using your bulk tank to produce hot water This unique, energy recovery device does just that by simply transferring latent refrigerant heat to cold water Here’s how it works Salvager is installed between the compressor and condenser of your bulk tank's refrigerant system Superheated refriger ant gas flows from the compressor through a jacket surrounding an insulated, glass-lined water storage tank The result hot water, produced at no extra energy cost, by salvaging other wise-wasted heat from your compressor Salvager can operate as a single or dual unit condenser and can be ganged to handle unusually large condensing loads Get the details from Agway Then put the Salvager to work in your milkhouse and start saving money on water heating bills AGWA dedicated service and outstanding contributions. Honored with the Distinguished Member Award were: Robert H. Beatty, retired from Amchem Products, Inc., now Union Carbide Agricultural Products Co., Inc ; Arthur Bing, professor of Floriculture with Cornell University; and John A. Meade, professor and extension weed specialist at Rutgers University, N J. The Award of Merit established in recognition of meritorious service to NEWSS members nearing retirement or who have retired was presented to; Dayton L Klmgman, Chief, Weed Science Laboratory, Belt sville, Maryland; Hugh J Murphy, agronomy professor at the University of Maine; and John Van Geluwe, Senior Research Specialist in Plant Protection, Ciba-Geigy The best paper and graduate student presentation awards, funded by BASF Wyandotte Corporation, were presented to the following: Best Paper Award ($200) - R.C.
