Steers and bulk in this same weight category were up 12 and 10 percent respectively from last year. All calves under 500 pounds numbered 422,000, six percent above January 1,1980. All U.S. cattle and calves on January 1, 1981, totaled 115 million head, three percent above January 1 last year and four percent above January 1, 1979. This is the second year of the current cattle cycle’s upward trend. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 49,9 million head, are up four percent from both a year ago and January 1, 1979, Beef cows, at 39.0 million head, are up five percent from last year and milk cows at 10.9 million head are up one percent from 1980. Other class in ventories on January 1 and their changes from last year are as follows; all heifers 500 pounds and over, 17.9 million, up four percent; milk replacement heifers, 4.35 million, up five percent; beef replacement heifers, 6.19 million, up four percent; other heifers, 7.33 million, up three percent; steers 500 pounds and over, 15.6 million, down three percent; bulls 500 pounds and over, 2.56 million, up three per cent; and heifer, steer and bull calves under 500 pounds, 29.1 million, up six percent. The 1980 calf crop, at 45.4 million head, is six percent above the 42.6 million bom in 1979. This is the first increase in the calf crop after five consecutive years of decline. SADDLE UP!
