CURT HOWARD FRED GOODRICH S. Race Street Myerstown, Pa. 17067 Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 31,1981—021 Protect tree seedlings, shrubs from winter drought LEBANON During this current period of freezing temperatures, cold winds, and low amounts of soil moisture, shrubbery, and tree seedlings should have some protection from the winter drying process for survival, says Gene Odato, forester-naturalist for the Lebanon Conservation District. This protection can be accomplished by wrapping burlap or a similar material around the shrubbery. Tree seedlings can be protected by inverting an empty milk carton or Similar carton over the seedlings, says the forester. When trees are under stress from disease, insects and the shock of tran splanting, an accompanying drought can kill these trees. This past summer’s drought has made life dif ficult for all species of animals and plants, he says “Animals have had to look hard for open water all summer and fall and now with the freezing tem peratures available water is very scarce Their bodies soon leam to exist with little water and food.” Trees on the other hand cannot move around to find water. Their roots are m the ground permanently in order to soak up moisture and nutrients At the other end of the tree, water is evaporating from the leaves. During a drought when the loss of water through the leaves exceeds uptake of water by the roots, the leaves will shrivel and turn brown According to Forester Odato, this occurred on the Blue Mountains last July. Odato notes that the upper third slope section with a southerly exposure is made up of very thin soil which allows the water to percolate quickly out of reach of the tree roots Also, the sun strikes this section of mountain throughout the day, so it stays warmer and drier than the north slope. During July, a brown out occurred on the Blue Mountain east of the Swatara Gap. Although the trees did not die, their growing season came to an abrupt and early halt. National occurances, suck as drought, make it harder to grow good healthy trees All that can be done once a tree dies is dig it out and replant in spring, says Odato. “From what I’ve seen we’ve lost a lot of tree seedlings this year from the drought,” he concludes.
