Ida’s
Notebook
Ida Hisser
Last night just about dusk
1 walked through our
meadow and looked along
the nver for our five large
white-grey geese, which
disappeared a week ago, a
few flakes of snow began to
fall softly. I do wish it would
snow during the day so that 1
could at least enjoy the sight
of the flakes floating down.
Then I spoke to some
hunters that I spied in our
woods but they said they
knew nothing about our
waterfowl. Some wild ducks
and wild geese are shot here
on the Conestoga.
So this morning after
clearing the walks and
porches of three inches of
fluffy white snow, filling the
furnace with expensive coal
and making the beds, I sat
down to write my diary.
Then I picked up a colorful
seed catalogue that also
contained “everything for
the garden.” And 1 would
;iy that that was a
f irrect description of the
c antents.
What first caught my eye
was a picture of a snake.

Now I’m not too fond of
snakes to start with as I
sometimes am surprised to
find them coiled under a
lima bean bush. So, I
assumed that now, not only
were earthworms, praying
mantis, and ladybugs being
sold —but also snakes.
Upon closer inspection I
realized that this was an
inflatable reptile made of
vinyl that was used to scare
off birds.
The bright colors of the
hhes, ins, roses and dahlias
are almost unbelievable in
their beauty and perfection.
They entice one to place
orders for them im
mediately. But now seed
companies are more and
more getting into ac
cessories to gardening. Not
only every imaginable tool to
raise vegetables is for sale
but also many appliance for
preserving your home
grown produce.
Also sold are pest controls,
wearing apparel and indoor
gardening supplies. So, if
you need it, they’ve got it.
management facilities.
Following the open house,
lunch will be available at

speaker will be Dieter Kreig,
editor of Farmshme.
In case of snow the
meeting will be postponed
untd February 7. For further
