Powers to retire as Chester agent WEST CHESTER - Robert A. Powers, Chester County Senior Extension Agent on The Pennsylvania State University’s Cooperative Extension Service staff, will retire December 31 with almost 38 years of experience. His headquarters have been in Chester County since 1943, although he served part time for two years in Delaware County. He was promoted to coordinator of county Extension programs in 1951. A native of Glenshaw, Powers earned a bachelor of science degree from Penn State in 1942, majoring in horticulture. During his career, the retiring county agent has developed educational programs in numerous areas of extension work. He initiated projects in soil improvement and management, including soil testing, erosion control, and farm drainage. He also was involved m forage crop improvement, focusing on hay and pasture management, insect control, and grassland farming. Powers is a member of the West Chester Rotary Club; Pennsylvania and National Associations of County Agricultural Agents; and Alpha Gamma Rho, Pi Alpha Xi, and Epsilon Sigma Phi fraternities. He is married to the for mer Elizabeth Bertolette, of Manheim.
