A26—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, December 13,1980 Holmes Farms tops Adams County DHIA BY MARY MYERS Staff Correspondent HEIDLERSBERG Bud Holmes of the Noel & Holmes Farms, R 1 Hanover, ac cepted the award for top herd at Adams County’s 52nd Annual DHIA dinner meeting. The Noel & Holmes herd with more than 60 registered Holstems on test averaged 19,246 pounds of milk and 753 pounds of butterfat. Although not distinguished by receiving a trophy, Leroy Deputy’s Holstein herd from R 1 East Berlin was high in milk production The averages are 109 cows on test, 20,518 pounds milk, and 653 pounds fat Pmey Lane Guernseys owned by Mervin Myers, R 1 Littlestown, placed second highest. Over fifty-five cows tested with averages of 14,088 pounds milk and 705 pounds fat. Third place herd was Yelow-Buttercup Farm owned by Larry Mummert, R 2 East Berlin. This herd averaged more than 108 registered Holsteins with 17,923 pounds milk and 701 pounds fat. Richard Mills, R 5 Get tysburg, was honored for having the herd with the greatest increase in but terfat production during the year. The increase was 98 pounds over the herd’s average of fat produced during 1979. Carol, a registered Holstein, owned by Stoner Brothers Dairy, R 2 East Berlin, won top honors by having the highest lifetime record for both milk and fat. During 14 lactations, “Carol” produced 225,815 pounds milk and 9574 pounds fat Leroy Deputy, HI East Berlin, is the owner of “Amanda,” top milk producer for the year Her winning record is 30,516 pounds milk with 969 pounds fat. Fifty-four herds were tested this year Fourteen achieved production in the category of 600 to 700 pounds butterfat They are: El Rho Farm, R 1 Abbottstown, 17,267 milk, 666 fat; Brown Valley Farm, Bud Holmes receives an award from Leroy Deputy for the Noel & Holmes Farms placing as the top DHIA herd in Adams County. R 3 Littlestown, 17,273 milk, 663 fat; Stoner Brothers Dairy, R 2 East Berlin, 17,646 milk, 658 fat, Weim Sharr Farms, R 2 New Oxford, 18,142 milk, 654 fat; Leroy Deputy, R 1 East Berlin, 20,518 milk, 653 fat; Roy A. Weaner, R 6 Gettysburg, 16,268 milk, 649 fat. Kling Ayr Farms, R 2 New Oxford, 16,995 milk, 646 fat; Buttonwood Farms, R 2 York Springs, 17,202 milk, 641 fat; James E. Miller, R 4 New Oxford, 12,514 milk; 633 fat; William Myers, R 3 Lit tlestown, 17,094 milk, 633 fat; Ray Dutterer, R 2 Lit tlestown, 16,175 milk, 632 fat; Richard K. Herr, R 5 Get tysburg, 17,597 milk, 617 fat; Eugene Witter, R 1 Gard ners, 15,748 milk, 611 fat; Penn Gate Farm, R 2 Lit tlestown, 17,300 milk, 602 fat, rounded out the list. Ribbons and certificates were awarded to the herd owners who achieved 600 or more pounds butterfat. The awards were donated by the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association. Three directors were elected to (he DHIA board. The new members are Dan Leer, R 1 York Springs; Vince Lobaugh, R 1 Aspers; Bob Meyers, R 2 Biglemlle. The group of over 300 heard presentations from several speakers. Among the various comments made, Ann Murren, Adams County Daily Princess, thanked the dairymen for producing such high quality products; Tun Brown, State DHIA Director, shared with the group the up-coming physical changes that Penn State’s testing lab will un dergo and how it will affect them, Don Messmger, DHIA Supervisor, commented on how well the DHIA program in Adams County is utilized and without any formal promotion.
