UNIVERSITY PARK —Of
3000 Pennsylvania farmers
surveyed recently, a high
majority indicated that
insecticides increased their
profits when used to control
pests of both dairy and beef
cattle.
The farmers responded
through a mail survey
-distributed by the
Agricultural Experiment
Station at Penn Stele. The
study was earned out to aid
U.S. Department of
Agnculture personnel in
evaluating the benefits and
safety of insecticides.
Both dairy and livestock
farmers considered hom and
face flies as the most dif
ficult pests to control and the
ones causing the most losses
m weight gam and carcass
quality as well as milk

In general, sprays were
the most popular form of

and dichlorvos (Vapona an

widely for mist sprays on
dairy farms. Beef producers
used methoxychlor and
malathion most often as
sprays.
Farmers also used
backrubbers in treating hom
flies. On dairy farms, these

using insecticides. None of
the harmful effects were
considered serious.
In treating hce, dairymen
most often used dusts as
crotoxyphos (Ciodrm an
example). Some dairy
farmers used sprays or dips
containing coumaphos (for
example Co-Ral),
pyrethnns, or Ciovap.
