Seed treatment
doubles yields
GEORGETOWN, Del. -
Seed treatment more than
doubled some barley yields
this year in demonstration
plots at the University of
Delaware Georgetown
Substation, reports ex
tension plant pathologist Bob
Mulrooney.
Starting with seed from a
field of Volbar barley har
vested in June, 1979, in which
12 percent of the grain beads
were infected with loose
smut, the specialist com
pared performance of this
seed under three different
fungicide treatments:
Vitavaz 200 (carbozin plus
thiram) at 4 ounces per 100
pounds of seed, Vitavaz DB
(carbozin) at 3 ounces per
100 pounds, and Arasan
(thiram) at the rate of 1.3
ounces per bushel

Barley was planted Oc
tober 26, 1979. Stand counts
were taken but no significant
differences were found. The
amount of loose smut in each
plot was assessed by
counting the number of
smutted heads at flowering.
Differences in this case were
pronounced and related
closely to yield.
Both Vitavaz treatments
were 100 percent smut free
compared to 27.2 percent
infection in the Arasan plots
and 30.2 percent infection in
untreated control plots.
Yield on untreated con
trols averaged 42 bushels an
acre compared to 4S.S with
Arasan, 61.3 with Vitavax
DB and 85.7 bushels with
Vitavax 200.
