Grand Champion steer, an Angus cross, was exhibited by Jeff Walker, West Chester, and the Reserve Grand Champion steer, a straight bred Angus, bred by Sam Wylie of Nottingham, was shown by Bill Mac- Cauley of Atglen. This year’s Champion Senior Showman was Bill Wylie, Nottingham. Champion Junior Showman was Ken Walker, West Chester, and Champion First Year Showman was Steve Sylver, Glenmoore. Champion Lightweight and Grand Champion Steer overall was shown by Bill MacCauley, Atglen. Gary Walker of West Chester exhibited the Champion Heavyweight and Reserve Grand Champion steer overall. Jeff Walker, brother of Gary, exhibited the Reserve Grand Cham pion Lightweight. Stand counts were taken but no significant differences were found. The amount of loose smut in each plot was assessed by counting the number of smutted heads at flowering. Differences in this case were pronounced and related closely to yield. Both Vitavaz treatments were 100 percent smut free compared to 27.2 percent infection in the Arasan plots and 30.2 percent infection in untreated control plots.
