Convention delegates, ages 15 to 22, from about 25 states competed for national honors in such areas as environmental education and beautification, production 9nd marketing; ex perimental horticulture; speaking contests, gar dening; plant propagation; and achievement and leadership recognition. Some 275 delegates competed m the judging, information and iden tification phases of the Horticulture Contest. Other program highlights included horticultural and leadership workshops and messages from experts in the horticultural fields. Climax of the four-day convention was the awards banquet where the national winners m the various categories of competition were announced. (NEDCOt was the mam speaker at the semi-annual dinner meeting of the Penn- York milk cooperative He listed many alarming trends in the dairy industry in his speech last Friday. First, there is an increase in milk production, he stated, and a decline in the consumption of cheese, the backbone of the milk in dustry. There is a tremen dous back-up of cheese, he stated, Cheddar cheese sales are off 28 pecent, and mozzarella, more, because pizza operations have gone into using mutation cheese. The hauling situation is not good, he continued, it is getting ver\ difficult to find truckers who can afford to keep their equipment in good condition. Murphy stated that four million dollars are being spent for a special cheese promotion in New York State.
