Supplies of fresh vegetables for 1980 are approximately 10 percent smaller than last year, and processors have used about 11 percent less. Prices paid growers for fresh-market vegetables will advance seasonally this fall and average substantially higher than a year ago. From now through the middle of next year, retail prices for processed vegetables will average moderately higher than last season, reflecting tighter supplies, higher processing costs, and increasing demand. During the third quarter of 1980, the index of farm prices for fresh-market vegetables stood at 210 (1967=100), compared with 188 a year ago. The third quarter index of retail prices for fresh vegetables, at 231, was nine percent higher than a year ago.
